1923: Fallers using a two-man crosscut saw. |
|
Then the men, called fallers, would begin to cut through from the other side of the tree. In early days, a double-bitted axe was used. Later, a two-man crosscut saw became popular. A two-man crosscut saw consisted of a long saw blade with a handle on each end. A person held one end and pushed and pulled the saw blade, in concert with the person on the opposite end, to cut across the grain of the tree. When the fallers had cut through the tree to point where it began to fall, they jumped off the springboards and got out of the way.
